There's no specific subject that I've painted more than religious art.
Perhaps the most accurate reason is that rarely any other
subject conveys so many different emotions. The messages can be
quite powerful, regardless of whether one's a believer or not
Born and raised as a Seventh-day Adventist, imagery in worship
was limited, if allowed at all. This was a difficult thing
for me for I craved being visual in my liturgical experience.
My mind was filled with images of Heaven, saints, etc...
Non-tangible concepts needed to be expressed in a more
"prehensile" manner. The arrows penetrating a Saint
Sebastian's flesh didn't hurt until I made them sink the skin
around it. The nails that held the Christ to the cross
were not strong enough to keep him there until I nailed them
there.
Growing up in a Catholic country, a lack of imagery just didn't
fit me right.
