Luis German Cajiga (b. 1934, Quebradillas,
Puerto Rico) A painter, a poet, a teacher.
He has been a friend of my family for many years, and he has
also been my mentor as an artist. His work has led me to
not only portray my cultural roots, but to appreciate them more
profoundly.
Cajiga's work is one of the most
inspirational artists I've encountered in Puerto Rico. His
work invites the mind to transport itself to a more pure place
and time. Locked in the brush strokes is the dream of a
Puerto Rico that still exists, though less known. The
colors may be bright and potent, describing his own energy and
exuberance, but the themes are somber and the subjects are
melancholic. The faces of his subjects appear as in a
trance; there's a sense of deep involvement in whatever
the activity he may be trying to portray.
Cajiga will remain for as long as there's memory of Puerto Rico
an emblem of its heritage, culture, and perseverance.
